Como Conservatory Engagement Photos & Tips in St. Paul, Minnesota | Minnesota Engagement Photographer
If you’re planning engagement photos at Como Conservatory in St. Paul, Minnesota, you’re choosing one of the most beautiful year-round locations in the Twin Cities. As a Minnesota engagement photographer, I recommend Como Park Zoo & Conservatory to couples who want natural light, lush greenery, and timeless architecture regardless of the season.
Located in St. Paul, Como Conservatory offers multiple indoor garden spaces filled with soft window light, tropical plants, and seasonal floral displays. This makes it especially ideal for winter engagement sessions in Minnesota when outdoor temperatures are unpredictable. Even in colder months, you can have vibrant, romantic engagement photos without worrying about snow or wind.
Whether you’re newly engaged or finalizing wedding plans, this guide will help you prepare for a smooth and beautiful engagement session at Como Conservatory.
Why Choose Como Conservatory for Engagement Photos?
1. Year-Round Greenery
Minnesota winters can be long and unpredictable. The conservatory provides consistent greenery, flowers, and warm indoor temperatures throughout the year. You never have to reschedule because of snowstorms or freezing temperatures.
2. Soft, Natural Light
The glass ceilings in the Palm Dome and Sunken Garden create beautiful diffused light. This is ideal for engagement photos that feel natural, romantic, and timeless.
3. Variety in One Location
Within one session, you can photograph:
The Sunken Garden
The Palm Dome
North Garden
Exterior stone architecture
Nearby Como Lake for sunset photos
You get diverse backgrounds without needing to drive between locations.
Best Time for Engagement Photos at Como Conservatory
The conservatory can become busy, especially on weekends. For the best experience:
Weekday mornings offer the most privacy
Early afternoons provide consistent indoor lighting
Sunset sessions allow time to step outside for golden light around Como Lake
Winter and early spring are especially popular because couples want greenery when the rest of Minnesota is still brown.
What to Wear for Como Conservatory Engagement Photos
Because the space is filled with natural greens and florals, neutral or soft tones photograph beautifully. Recommended colors:
Cream
Soft blue
Sage
Dusty rose
Light gray
Avoid neon tones or busy patterns that compete with the vibrant plants. Flowy dresses move beautifully in the Palm Dome. Structured outfits complement the elegant stone architecture.
Permit Information for Como Conservatory Engagement Sessions
Professional photography permits are required at Como Park Zoo & Conservatory. It’s important to:
Apply in advance
Confirm time limits
Review location rules
As a Minnesota engagement photographer, I always help couples navigate the permit process so everything runs smoothly on session day. We will work together to decide what best fits your needs and then I will reach out and do the leg work to acquire the proper permits necessary so that is one less thing on your plate.
Tips for a Smooth Session
Arrive 10–15 minutes early to park and settle in. I always normally recommend arriving a little early to your session anyway BUT with Como be at the door early if we are shooting inside the gardens. This location is very strict when it comes to timing of using the space.
Bring a second outfit if you want variety (Depending on location. Como rules will not allow you to use their bathrooms for changing clothes during garden rentals) But, If we are doing a second location outside, I will bring a changing space (think similar to a camping one) that we can change outside if needed.
Keep accessories simple
Plan hair that holds up in humidity
Trust your photographer to guide posing naturally
Even if you feel awkward in front of the camera, the conservatory’s light and textures make it easy to create effortless, connected images.
Pairing Como Conservatory With an Outdoor Location
One of my favorite approaches is combining indoor garden portraits with a quick outdoor stop at Como Lake or front of Como Conservatory is STUNNING. This will give you more variety both inside and outside! The grounds of Como are free to shoot at and it is a frequent location I use in the summer time! This gives you:
Elegant indoor greenery
Soft sunset light
Architectural textures
Seasonal variety
This combination makes your gallery feel complete and dynamic.
